Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has described leading Ghana as both a privilege and a major responsibility as the team prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced forward, who has become one of the squad’s senior leaders, says he remains focused on serving the team and helping his teammates perform at their best.
Speaking to FIFA, Ayew expressed pride in wearing the captain’s armband while stressing the importance of staying calm under pressure.
“Obviously, it’s an honour and a big responsibility. I just take it calmly and do my best for the country and for my teammates,” he said.
The Leicester City attacker explained that his leadership style is built around unity, motivation and ensuring that every player is fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
“I always put them first and try to do my best for them. For everyone to be happy and for everybody to be ready for each game,” Ayew added.
The 34-year-old also revealed that he prefers a simple and natural approach to leadership, choosing to take things one day at a time rather than becoming overwhelmed by expectations.
“I take it day by day. I’m just a chilled person, I’m natural. I just deal with things as they come,” he stated.
As Ghana prepares for another appearance on football’s biggest stage, Ayew’s experience and leadership will be crucial as the Black Stars aim to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
With a blend of experienced players and emerging talents in the squad, Ayew will be expected to guide the team both on and off the pitch as they chase World Cup success.
