Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has praised Antoine Semenyo for his remarkable season and believes the forward is ready to carry his impressive club form onto the international stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Semenyo earned a place in Ghana’s final 26-man squad for the tournament following an outstanding campaign with Manchester City. Since joining the Premier League champions from AFC Bournemouth in January, the forward has enjoyed a sensational run, scoring 17 league goals and earning a nomination for the Premier League Player of the Season award.
Speaking to the media ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Wales, Ayew commended Semenyo’s hard work, determination and rapid development.
“He’s absolutely brilliant. We’ve all seen the progress he’s made since his time at Bournemouth, and he has continued that form at Manchester City. The fans are proud of him, and so are his teammates,” Ayew said.
The Ghana captain also stressed that Semenyo’s achievements reflect the collective effort of the team and expressed confidence that the attacker will continue delivering for the Black Stars.
“We hope he keeps performing at that level and does the same for Ghana. It’s not only about one player; we’re all working hard as a team, and we’re happy with the progress we’re making.”
The Black Stars will face Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium in an international friendly as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana will conclude their pre-tournament preparations with another friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before turning their attention to the World Cup in North America.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before facing England on June 23. Their final group-stage match will be against Croatia on June 27.
With experienced leaders such as Jordan Ayew and in-form stars like Antoine Semenyo in the squad, Ghana will be hoping to make a strong impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
