An ex to the jail term, the court fined him GH¢3,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in a six-month custodial sentence. The court also ordered Apetor to refund the outstanding GH¢79,000 after serving his prison term.
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Frank Morgan Dorvi, the complainant, a secretary who lives at Ablekuma in Accra, had been in a romantic relationship with Apetor, who resides at Bubuashie-Atico. The pair had planned to travel to the Netherlands and sought the services of a travel agent identified as Razak.
The travel agent reportedly advised them to increase the balance in their bank account to strengthen their chances of obtaining visas. Since Apetor was unemployed, the complainant secured a loan from a relative and, between September 24, 2024, and February 17, 2025, deposited portions of the money into Apetor’s Ecobank account.
She also handed over cash to Apetor and other individuals to make additional deposits, bringing the total amount credited to the account to GH¢114,000.
The prosecution told the court that Apetor secretly obtained an ATM card linked to the account and, over several months, withdrew the entire amount without the complainant’s knowledge. He also acquired a cheque book but concealed it in their room, creating the impression that the money remained untouched because no cheques had been issued.
The court heard that Apetor later obtained a bank statement from the account to support his visa application. However, his visa application was unsuccessful due to errors in the forms he submitted.
The deception came to light when the complainant requested the return of the GH¢114,000 and discovered that the funds had been exhausted. She subsequently reported the matter to the police in August 2025, leading to Apetor’s arrest.
During police interrogation, Apetor admitted that he had spent most of the money on football betting and lost it.
Investigators recovered GH¢35,000, leaving an outstanding balance of GH¢79,000, which the court has ordered him to repay.
