Asamoah Gyan Praises Caleb Yirenkyi After Impressive Performance Against Wales

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has heaped praise on rising Black Stars midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi following his outstanding display in Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Wales in an international friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The FC Nordsjaelland midfielder was one of Ghana’s standout performers, crowning his impressive outing with the Black Stars’ only goal of the match as the team continued preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Beyond finding the back of the net, Yirenkyi impressed with his composure in possession, intelligent movement and ability to contribute effectively in attack. His mature performance drew admiration from fans and football pundits alike.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Gyan described the youngster as a natural talent whose development has been remarkable.

“He’s a natural talent. The way he’s rising is very incredible. Everybody saw what he did yesterday, not only the goal, but his positioning, passing and the way he joins attacks,” Gyan said.

The former Sunderland striker noted that Yirenkyi’s contribution extended far beyond his goal, highlighting his awareness and overall impact on the team’s performance.

Gyan also made a light-hearted comparison with former Black Stars defender Jonathan Mensah, suggesting that Ghana players wearing the number three jersey seem to have a knack for scoring goals.

“He’s not the only player to score wearing the number three jersey. Jonathan Mensah did it too. It looks like goals are in the number three shirt,” he joked.

Meanwhile, Yirenkyi and his Black Stars teammates have arrived in the United States to continue their final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana will face Jamaica in a friendly on June 10 before beginning their World Cup campaign. The four-time African champions have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will be hoping to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable quarter-final appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
